Dear Reader (2024-04-18),
In the last post (Five Stans 33) you and I began exploring Khiva’s old city. In today’s post I continue my jackdaw approach of capturing whatever catches my eye. My travel companions and I visit a weaver (17) who is kind enough to let me photograph her at work. The speed at which she ties knots is remarkable. After a certain number of knots, she uses a small pair of shears to trim the knotted wool to the exact height of the finished carpet. All this was done using years and years of muscle memory.
After today, you and I will take the night train to the end of the line. This grand adventure will soon be coming to an end, but I still have wonders, curiosities, and sparkly things to share.
You are welcome to share a link to this page with others.
As always, all comments are welcome and sought.
Cheers, Sean

1. I would be totally freaked out if those two figures turned out to be the distant cousins of Hidy and Howdy from the Calgary Olympics, and had people in them, to move and wave to the tourists.
7. I’m totally intrigued by this.
17. Watching people doing various forms of hand work is often fascinating.
Sean, your pictures from Khiva are stunning!
Thank you Estelle!
