Dear Reader (2025-03-10)
Happy Penguin Day. This is a beverage post, and as in previous beverage posts you know your options. Besides the images there are three sections to this post, Respite, Housekeeping, Notes on Photos
Respite
Governments long ago abdicated their responsibility to offset corporate greed by looking after infrastructure, its citizens, and the disadvantaged. Corporations pretend to care and have massive spin budgets that hide and distort their practices. Technology leaders don’t care about the difference between being able to do something and whether it should be done. Many people no longer wish to distinguish opinion from fact. Into this morass comes a series of politicians who have abandoned principles of social democracy and are actively trying to destroy valuable institutions.
All of the above is beyond my control. Though I am sometimes sad, anxious, a little lost, and my feet aren’t always on stable ground, here is what I can do. I try to be good human, make art, and in my small digital outpost (website and FB), I hope I can provide a little respite from the storm by celebrating the wonder around us and maybe put an occasional smile on your face. I am so glad you dropped by. Thank you for visiting.
PS I am excited by new projects and upcoming wanders.
Housekeeping
Today is the last post from my South America and Antarctic wander. There is a series of posts corresponding to each of the three blocks of that wander. The Buenos Aires series is composed of 5 FB posts (4 web site posts) beginning on 2024-12-27. The Patagonia series is composed of 8 plus a transition post beginning on 2025-01-13. The Antarctic series is composed of 8 posts beginning on 2025-02-02. The complete series is available at seandrysdale.com.
Notes On Photos
I know there are more than a dozen photos here, but I make exceptions for penguins.
Adelie penguins have a white circle around their eyes, weigh about 3.6kg to 6.0 kg, and stand 45 to 70 cm high. Chinstrap penguins have as the name suggests have a black line under their chins, weigh about 4.5 – 8.5 kg and stand 50 – 90 cm tall. Gentoo penguins have a white slash above their eyes (David Bowie glitter rock era), weigh about 3.2 – 5.3 kg and stand 65 to 75 cm high. Despite being highly illegal and highly impractical, we did discuss how Adelie penguins could easily fit in carry-on luggage.
For the safety of the penguins, we had to stay a minimum of 5 m (15 feet) away from the penguins. In some cases, we were obligated to stay further away especially if there was the possibility of disturbing their nesting sites or their colonies.
~ 02 – Penguins trample paths in the snow called penguin highways, which makes it easier for them to move from place to place.
~ 03 – Notice the eggs – top left penguin.
~ 10 – On land, penguins usually travel. On rough terrain they will slide on their bellies.
~ 11 – Penguin nests are built from carefully selected and placed stones, and the occasional bone.

The penguin photos are stellar, especially any of them depicting airborne!
