Dear Reader (2024-04-17)
In the last post (Five Stans 32) you and I left the weird and remarkable Turkmenistan, and crossed into Uzbekistan for the third and last time. In today’s post we visit the third of Uzbekistan’s three Silk Road jewels, Khiva. The first two jewels were Samarkand (Five Stans 21-23), and Bukhara (Five Stans 24,25). Khiva has a playful and relaxed commercialism to it.
My hope in today’s collection, which will carry over into Five Stans 34, is that I can continue to show you shapes, lines, textures, and moods particular to a place. Our hotel was close to the main gate, which made it easy to wander into the old city throughout the day, and into the evening.
You are welcome to share a link to this page with others.
As always, all comments are welcome and sought.
Cheers, Sean

7. One of the staples in science fiction is to portray people that are not us, by wearing weird hats. Those look practical for keeping the top of your head warm, but not your ears.
11. Those 4 men in the background are agog with disbelief that anyone could so mishandle a camera.
22. Somehow, that looks like a school.
I always thought the old city centers with the markets where you could buy anything, was called the pale, and that’s where the phrase came from. I’m so disappointed to find that it’s Irish.
