Dear Reader (2026-05-22 posted simultaneously to FB)
One of the tools in my photographic toolbox is a variable neutral density filter (reduces amount of light going through the lens). As I don’t use it enough, I don’t feel comfortable using it and the cycle continues. So, as we are in practice mode, today was an excellent opportunity to gain greater familiarity with this tool. Keith and I went on an enjoyable ramble out to the Elbow Valley.

We chatted a bit about my adventures with a variable density filter. I did not mourn when it slipped out of my hands into the water of Red Rock Canyon. I picked up a 10 stop filter, with two assumptions in mind. I could always tweak exposure time or aperture to get the effect I wanted, or at least an acceptable image and who’s to say what else could have been done. Plus, go big or go home.
Anyways, both of these are lovely. I worked on similar images, but of course I won’t know what I’ve got till I develop the film.
Bon Voyage!
