Artist’s Statement
At its simplest, in an era where it is easy to be angry, sad, fearful, anxious or depressed, if I can engage you the viewer to wander and explore with me, help you smile, or feel good even briefly then I have been successful.
I spent most of May 2024 walking along the Southwest coast of Portugal, and walking in and around a couple of hilltop villages near the Spanish border east of Lisbon. One of my intentions of that month of wandering was to collect images for what has become Building Blocks. Each of the 12 pieces in the exhibition are called panels. All the photographic components of the panels were captured in Portugal, and the fringes on the panels are composed of scanned fragments from paper maps of Portugal.
In this exhibition I continue striving to create images that capture a viewer’s attention by leveraging precision in execution, bold forms, strong compositions, and colour theory, and then encourage the viewer to linger and explore the relationships within the panels and triptychs. In so doing, the patient viewer is rewarded with many possible avenues of thought.
Besides my appreciation of nuance and my abhorrence of binary thinking, I am also interested in providing an alternative to the flick and click of social media, by creating bodies of work best appreciated in-person.
