Dear Reader (2025-10-25 – posted simultaneously to FB)
Our wander through Constantine continues.
The Ottoman empire in North Africa was divided into regencies, one of which was the Regency of Algiers. A regency was divided into areas ruled by a bey (governor). The bey of beys (governor of governors) was called a dey, and just like the highlander there could only be one (per regency).
In 1830 The Regency of Algiers fell to the French. Constantine still had a bey,Ahmed Bey ben Mohamed Chérif. In 1835 his new palace, which had been under construction for 10 years, was completed. The French eventually made it to Constantine to 1837, and the rule of the beys was over. All this is to say that the last Bey of Constantine only lived in his new palace for 2 years.
